The Liturgical Organist, Vol. 1 [Paperback] Review

The Liturgical Organist, Vol. 1 [Paperback]I'm in this book virtually every Mass I play. At some point (pre, during, or post) during the liturgy I need a brief piece of fill. Major and minor keys are each represented with pieces ranging from 4 bars to over a page. Also, modulation formulas and extended pieces. All arranged by key. A very handy book that fills both those expected and unexpected gaps in the service.

Boellmann Heures Mystiques Op.30 Urtext (Kalmus Edition) [Plastic Comb] Review

Boellmann Heures Mystiques Op.30 Urtext [Plastic Comb]The organ music of Boelmann is not so well known apart from the Suite Gothique of course. For years I only had Heures Mystiques op. 29.
In a recent organ marathon in my home city all works of Boelmann have been performed. I played a couple of works from opus 29. This has inspired me to buy opus 30.
It is a nice book with well playable music also for liturgic purposes.

12 Melodious Pieces, Book 1, Op. 63 (An Alfred Masterwork) [Paperback] Review

12 Melodious Pieces, Book 1, Op. 63 [Paperback]In this book, the student gets practice in diatonic scales, hand-crossing, octave jumps, and dotted rhythms.
This book offers practice in left-hand and right-hand arpeggios, thirds, slurs, staccato, repeated notes, chromatic and diatonic scales, and triplets.

The harmony is more interesting than in opus 64, but not much.In #8, there are a couple of minor substitution chords in the melody. In #9, there is a secondary dominant followed by a relative minor chord.

I still say that Concone, Gurlitt, and Burgmuller are better choices.

An excellent choice for early-intermediate students.

The Artistry of Bill Evans Vol.2 [Paperback] Review

The Artistry of Bill Evans Vol.2 [Paperback]This is actually Volume 2 (1995), and contains EIGHT (not eighty) transcriptions of Bill Evans piano parts off the recordings. This collection is better than Vol. 1.First, vol. 1 did not transcribe thecomping behind the bass solos.Second, vol. 1 focused on the late Fantasy& early Warner Bros. recordings (1970s), while this collection rangesfrom the first trio on Riverside, some Verve solo and trio sides, and solosides from Fantasy. Gripe: when transcribing trio recordings, is it toomuch to ask that the bass part also be transcribed? Songs: "AutumnLeaves" (mono version), "Spring is Here," and "What isThis Thing Called Love" from PORTRAIT IN JAZZ; "Here's That RainyDay" from ALONE; "I Should Care" and "Make SomeoneHappy" from TOWN HALL; "The Touch of Your Lips" and"What Kind of Fool am I" from ALONE (AGAIN). No extras (vol. 1had a short essay and photos).

Clavia Nord Electro 2 61-Key Stage Piano/Organ Review

Clavia Nord Electro 2 61-Key Stage Piano/OrganFor the gigging keyboardist, the Electro 61 falls somewhere between a Godsend and a no-brainer.It's hard to avoid hyperbole when discussing this instrument, but anyone who has toted a Hammond rig and a Wurlie and a controller and peripherals and every other blasted thing will get my drift. For 29 years, I've been condemned to driving a cargo van full of vintage keys which weren't designed to leave the living room in the first place.I've herniated myself in the process, and was almost killed in a rear-end collision that flipped my 'B' upside down.I have made every effort to 'scale down' -- Korg CX3, Micro B, Roland VK7, Oberheim, Hammond XM3, and oddball stuff. All of the aforementioned fell woefully short of Hammond heaven, and of course, didn't offer any EP features or anything else.

The buzz about the Nord was intriguing, so I checked one out at a local store.Typically, the young, cooler-than-thou clerk could barely get the thing to power up, and I was pretty much left to navigate on my own.But five minutes on the Electro made me a believer (of COURSE I ordered one online -- any dope on the floor of a music store who can't get a keyboard that produces five sounds to work doesn't get his commission from me).

Here goes (note -- run this guy stereo, even if ya have to buy a little PA to do so): the Hammond end of things is simply exquisite.I did a little EQ stuff (the Electro features EQ and presence knobs on the dashboard. What a concept! You know, you can actually tweak your sound during performance...), rolled back the key click, and entered my own registrations.Fat, juicy, and soulful.Big, even in the high harmonics. Not a trace of cheese.Outlandish chorus.Completely persuasive percussion. The best Leslie ever, and I don't mean 'pretty good.'It sounds like the real deal.I personally don't have an issue with the 'draw-buttons' and I like controlling the Leslie speed via footswitch. The last thing I want is another broken bakelite switch hanging pitifully on my 'board.

Rhodes: ya want Richard Tee?Yassah."Just the Way You Are?" (you'll actually want to play the old warhorse) -- roger roger.Steely Dan ala Victor Feldman and/or "Nightfly" stuff?Yes jones.Through the Electro, younger players might actually discover what a Rhodes really sounds like.Twenty years of screaching over-cranked synth knockoffs did the Rhodes sound no favors.

Wurlie: intitially, I couldn't find one quite 'mean' enough, but five minutes with 'presence' did the trick.Early Ray, in a big way.A little tremolo and it's Mussel Sholes central.Just like my 200.Plays like it too.Light, but CONFIDENT feeling.

Clavs: good grief.Perfect.

CP80:Back in the day, I wanted one desperately. But, of course, like every thing else back in the day, I coudn't afford one.Now I OWN one.I LOVE it.Newbies probably won't 'get' the CP80, but us old timers will have our fun.

Piano: contrary to most opinions, I think the piano is very good.I don't like it as well as my Kurweil 1200 Pro I, but it's entirely usable.I re-EQed it, rolling off some of the not-so-pleasant highs.Prior to a gig recently, I played some standards using the piano sound.I was testing the waters to see if the relatively short keyboard and on-board piano would work for jobbing.Absolutely.It won't cut stride, but an Evans-esque approach is A-OK.

Conclusion: the Electro 61 is hands-down the most impressive and exciting 'keyboard' I've ever owned, and I have had a ton of stuff.Unlike a synth, it is designed for the player to make music on it.In that sense, it is a bonafide musical instrument.

Kohler Digital KD160 Ebony High Polish Review

Kohler Digital KD160 Ebony High PolishI used to own a Clavinova."Used to" is the operative word here.I really feel like I have moved up about 10 notches with the purchase of the Kohler.

Unlike the Clavinova, the "grand" sounds like a grand.Even in the highest octave, it does not sound tinny. The other instrumental sounds sound like real instruments whereas the Clav sounded "electronic."

The polyphony is excellent, and more than adequate to sate any musician's appetite.

The keys and hammer action are weighted. The Kohler feels perfectly natural and as realistic as any acoustic.(Hooray!!).

Everything can be adjusted which is very satisfying, as the velocity senstivity can sometimes make the instumental sound become a bit harsh rather than louder, as velocity would on an acoustic.

Finally there is the speaker system. It is wonderful. The Clav was disappointing in this regard. It sounded as if it used hand-me-down speakers from a 1990 boom-box.The only time the Clav ever sounded good to mewas when I wore headphones. The Kohler, on the other hand, is a pleasure to listen to, as it incorporates a high-end stereo speaker system.

I love it.I am sure you will too.

The Complete Elegies, The Six Sonatinas: and Other Original Works for Solo Piano [Paperback] Review

The Complete Elegies, The Six Sonatinas: and Other Original Works for Solo Piano [Paperback]The book has a good selection of Busoni works, the editing, if any, is moderate and in good taste. Casio 61-Key Portable Keyboard with Stand - Black (CTK720STAD) Review

Casio 61-Key Portable Keyboard with Stand - Black (CTK720STAD)Now, it's been ages since I have had a keybaord or piano around the house. I wanted to get myself back into the swing of things again so I thought I would low-ball it on the price and just get something to get the creative juices flowing again. Well, you get what you paid for.

The CTK-720 arrived today perfectly fine (sans a few nasty dings in the box, the unit was unscathed). I set it up, hooked it up to my own speaker system to make sure it would have the chance to produce a nice clean sound. Boy, not even my speakers could help it.

Beyond the fact that this is definitely a "Beginners" keyboard in the way that just about any instrument other than "piano" sounds like a midi file circa 1980s there is an odd issue. As a 5-octave keyboard you would want to be able to move around, but there's something odd in the mid octaves on the CTK-720.

Bear in mind, before this I had owned Korgs and Rolands, 88 weighted piano key styles. So I may be a bit spoiled. But for the first time in my life I have heard an electronic keyboard that actually needs to be tuned. The mid-range octaves on the CTK-270 produce a warble when the key is first pressed. Much like a piano that has the cord ever so slightly out of tune.

Unfortunately, my tuning key does little to help me with am electronic keyboard. It's a shame, if it weren't for the dodgy "tones" and the mysterious out-of-tune mid-range keys it would have been a nice keyboard to start out on all over again.

I will give it two stars just because it's still functional. I may just be a bit too discerning at this point.

Minor Scale Picture Workbook [Paperback] Review

Minor Scale Picture Workbook [Paperback]This book offers a unique way to learn scales.Anyone can learn scales!I'm privileged to know the author and I know her method works. This book along with the major scales workbook helps students of all levels to learn their scales on the keyboard using pictures that stay in your mind when you play. This is NOT your ordinary scale book.Glenna was my 5th and last piano teacher and by her method I went from knowing none of my scales to memorizing all of my scales along with their counterparts.Learning scales is a very important part of learning to play the piano and through her method I was able to play better because I knew the background for any piece I'd play.An example in the major scale workbook is the C major scale.Think of a color crayon, how it's straight across.Crayon begins with C, and since a crayon is straight you remember when you're playing that the C scale has no sharps or flats -it's played straight across the white keys starting on any C.I love using these books.I teach now, and these are the only books I recommend when learning scales. It's absolutely the best investment!

Williams Overture 88 Key Digital Piano Review

Williams Overture 88 Key Digital PianoI'm certainly not a professional, however, I do know what a piano is supposed to sound like, and I know the difference between a Harpsichord, Organ, and a Harmonica: 'nuff said.

First of all I would like to say that the Williams Digital Piano is by far the best instrument I have ever owned, next to my toy, an old Casio keyboard that I owned for quite some time, I was happy to finally sell that off in a garage sale. When I went hunting for another piano, I took my Sony headphones and headed off to various stores with digital pianos. This one by far sounded the closest to a real upright piano (Well, the Yamaha was closer, but another 1K more expensive...), and it had the features and look I was wanting.

Pros ---
1.The weighted digital piano keys mimic perfectly the hammer-action of a real piano, and the sound is equally amazing. As I said I tested it out in headphones, and even at home in total silence the headphones are clear as anything and sound perfect. The built-in speakers that are attached to the piano work equally as well.I 'tested' it note-for-note, unplugging my headphones and listening to the built-in speakers, and I can safely say that I don't hear a difference at all.No "fuzzy-sounds", no buzzing, no humming, etc.Sounds nice.

2.After listening to several Harpsichord songs, I played a few notes on the piano to compare. So far I can't tell the difference between the notes played in the song and the ones I played on the piano.

3.Same with the Organ and string setting, both sound equally realistic and about as close to an acoustic piano as I'm going to get without spending thousands of dollars.

4.I actually bought this piano online, yes, from Musicians Friend. No, I am not an employee there, nor have I ever heard of it.I did call them up to see how exactly it was going to be mailed.I mean, sure it is less than 1K for the digital piano, but I wanted to make sure it wasn't going to end up in several pieces on my doorstep.I have to say the piano box arrived in no less than perfect condition.Go with Musicians Friend if you are going to buy this!Cons ---
1.Okay, so again I'm new at this. So, of COURSE I played the Play-Along songs while I waited for my real books to arrive. One of the irks I have is that when you use the digital piano to listen to the play-along songs, be forewarned that it is MUCH louder than when you are playing the piano normally. Also, if you are trying to play along, you have to compensate the volume by turning it down to hear the song correctly, but I also had a hard time hearing what I was playing on the piano!

2.Same thing goes with the metronome. It is MUCH louder than the 'volume' of the piano. If I had to change something, it would be how loud the Metronome sounds as compared to the piano. The volume, when recording songs and playing them back, however, is at the 'same volume' as the piano.Don't know if it is just my piano or what, but listening to the Play-Along songs and using the metronome is quite annoying.

3.I'm a computer programmer.I bought this piano because it came with a USB cable, anddd I thought I could use my computer knowledge to retrieve the songs off of the Williams Digital Piano.Not-so-much.There is no way to get the recorded songs off of the piano, the only thing the USB cable does is transmit the MIDI messages to a computer if you have the correct software installed. For me, kinda pointless.

Well, I think that about sums it up.Oh yeah, well, I don't think that this is a "Con" per-se, however: this piano comes disassembled.Which means that you have to assemble it.Fine, but the problem lies:this piano does not have instructions included to tell you how to assemble the piano.I, personally, was able to assemble is promptly. However, at first it was irksome laying out all the pieces and figuring out what goes where.

The Harmony of Bill Evans (keyboard instruction) [Paperback] Review

The Harmony of Bill Evans [Paperback]This book is unique in a couple of ways.It is a compilation of articles on how Bill Evans used harmony.Obviously, Evans' extensive studies in college and beyond went far beyond what one thin book can cover, but it does what it does efficiently and well. The author is an unabashedly effusive fan of Evans and throws this energy into the work to make it as clear and understandable as possible.

Articles include:
Peri's Scope-Harmonic Analysis (includes Evans' intensive regimen for learning new songs)
Peri's Scope-Thematic Analysis (good discussion of developing a musical theme)
Times Remembered-Harmonic Analysis
Times Remembered-Modal Analysis
Times Remembered-Intervalic Analysis
"Funny Man" and "I Should Care" (lots of practical discussion of reharmonization techniques
I Fall in Love Too Easily (more reharmonization)
Twelve Tone Tune (probably of more academic than practical interest)
How Deep is the Ocean (advanced reharmonization)
B Minor Waltz (more advanced reharmonization)

For instant gratification, the book provides a rigorous method for learning new songs. For reassurance, it reminds the reader of how much Bill Evans worked on songs before they were "battle ready" and how long the author took to work out fingerings to one Evans song (eight months). It is amazing that jazz musicians have any time to perform at all, given all the techniques they have to learn. For future reference, the book constantly trumpets the virtue of Arnold Schoenberg's 1911 Theory of Harmony, the influence of which is pointed out periodically in Evans' work.

The book presents articles in a fairly logical order of increasing difficulty. It is presented in a fashion easily understandable to me, who knows a good deal of theory, but has no degree in music.

The bad news is, this book will not have an instant and noticeable effect on your piano playing. The good news is, this book is by a highly skilled, true blue Evans fan, who provides enough material to keep most musicians of above-average skill very busy for a long time.Plus, with careful reading and intensive practice, the book should eventually move the dedicated Evans fan a few steps closer to understanding how to play a bit more like him.

I may be a little hard giving this bargain of a music book only four stars.Except for the author's "groupie" tone, the lack of instant magic for my piano playing, and lack of chapters on my favorite tunes, this book would rate five stars from me.It definitely gets my recommendation for people seeking what it offers.

Quik-Lok BX-14 Padded Keyboard Bench Review

Quik-Lok BX-14 Padded Keyboard BenchIt's really hard to tell the quality and size of the benches seen online from a simple picture and the numbers quoted (occasionally)in profiles. That being said, this is the second bench I've bought online, the first being proportioned for Golem from LOTR.

This bench is a high quality product. It has a very thick pad for comfort and has an adjustable range set for an averaged sized person which provides for proper posture when playing a standard sized keyboard or piano.Other products may be a little cheaper...but they're also undersized to save on material costs....and they make you play the piano in a very uncomfortable position.Spend a little extra and buy a bench like this, so you'll enjoy your time playing!

The Complete Piano Sonatas, Vol. 1 [Plastic Comb] Review

The Complete Piano Sonatas, Vol. 1 [Plastic Comb]Haydn's piano sonatas were composed over almost 50 years, and range from rather undistinctive rococco pieces to great masterworks of the genre. These are not always so easy to play and require some knowledge ofclassical style and ornamentation.
I learned several sonatas from theseDover editions, which fit the bill when I was economizing, as they are thecheapest complete edition out there. Unfortunately, they are a reprint ofan outdated 19th C. edition, with a layout somewhat difficult to read, andnot always well-printed. Much better as an investment is the Henle edition,in three volumes, despite the significantly greater cost.

Casio PX200 Privia Digital Piano with Hammer Action Review

Casio PX200 Privia Digital Piano with Hammer ActionI'm a semi-pro jazz pianist. I own an old Balwin baby grand and a top end Roland rd700sx keyboard. I bought the Casio as a practice keyboard at my summer home. I couldn't be more pleased with it. The action is very heavy (a good quality) - heavier that either of my other pianos, but not as much as your average Steinway grand. But the action is also very responsive and quite a pleasure to play. The primary piano sound is balanced and nice to listen to (the others not so).
The tone is no where as beautiful or as expressive (wide dynamic range) as my Roland, but the Roland cost 4 times as much!.

It is very useful for practicing and the built-in speakers are loud enough to play in a party setting. I've used it for gigs with a stereo amp and it's very adequate - and weighs 27 lbs. I've seen it selling for less at other online musical instrument sites so check around.

All in all a very nice keyboard and well worth the cost.

USB Teach Me Piano Kit Review

USB Teach Me Piano KitI wanted a usb midi cable, since my new machine doesn't have a game port and I had been using a gameport midi cable to connect my sythesizer to my computer. This piano kit seemed to fit the bill. And, I liked that for about the cost of a cable I get the piano instruction software for my son basically included.

Before buying, I verified with Voyetra that this cable works both with mac and pc, since I have a PC desktop and Mac laptop.I didn't want a PC only cable. (Mac OSX has built-in compatible USB drivers for this Turtle Beach brand cable.)

Unfortunately, I spent over half a day trying combinations of connecting the cable between 2 different synths and my two computers... I get either computers to send data to control either synth, but got flaky MIDI IN data coming into the computers from every combination. It would send either random data or only "note off" commands but not "note on".

Eventually I gave up, suspecting the cable rather than my synths, computers, or application software. So I emailed voyetra tech support (they have no phone support), who replied on the next business day suggesting I download and install the firmware upgrade from their website. The upgrade worked easily, and now everything works great. (Note that the firmware upgrade needs to be run on a PC not a Mac.)

The included piano instruction software is good, and my son enjoys it, but it uses a lower screen resolution, leading me to believe that it was not written recently. But it has no problem running under XP.

Overall it's a nice product for the money, but the install was frustrating. You might need to know a bit about your synth, MIDI, and how to troubleshoot -- unless you get lucky.

Sonatas (A Kalmus Classic Edition) [Paperback] Review

Sonatas [Paperback]The scores are generally accurate and I love that it's Urtext and without much editorial suggestions, in fact, there isn't any single writing through out the book, which comes to the reason why it is only three stars: no fingering at all. Other bothersome defects are its bindings (mine's already fallen apart and I've only had it for less than a year.) Also, it doesn't contain the complete sonatas. Lastly, though the scores are generally easy to read, but I did find some faded prints and measures (in fact, a lot of them) that should be spread longer for easy reading are instead squashed together.

I'd buy a more expensive book for better quality instead of this one.

The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of All Time: Ranking, Analysis & Photos (Book) [Hardcover] Review

The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of All Time: Ranking, Analysis & Photos [Hardcover]Ranking musicians/artists is wrongheaded but some of these picks are just beyond the pale.He ranks the number 1-4 top jazz pianists of all time as Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Bud Powell and Art Tatum.Reasonable picks. So who's number 5?Gotta be along the lines of Chick, Herbie, Keith, McCoy, Cecil, Fatha Hines, Teddy Wilson, Fats, or Jelly Roll, right?Get this- Monty Alexander!and who's number 6?Benny Green!I was in disbelief. As you wade through the rest of the picks you realize that the closer a pianist comes to duplicating Oscar's style the higher he is rated (Gene Harris rates 12 if I recall). Now I have plenty of Monty Alexander and Benny Green recordings and enjoy their playing, but they are hardly the sort of original pianists that would merit their rubbing shoulders with these giants. This book may familarize the jazz piano enthusiast with some players they didn't previously know but a better book in that regard would be Robert Doershuk's "88: The Giants of Jazz Piano."Doerschuk's book features more pianists, is more informative and comes with a CD.I will say that Rizzo's book has some nice photos.

Toccatas, Fantasias, Passacaglia and Other Works for Organ [Paperback] Review

Toccatas, Fantasias, Passacaglia and Other Works for Organ [Paperback]With this volume we get some of the most striking, popular and yet profound of J.S. Bach's organ music:the 4 Toccata and Fugue pairs, the g-minor Fantasia and Fugue, the great c-minor Passacaglia and Fugue, and a number of other thoroughly-beautiful works (e.g., the Fantasias in G-major {"Pièce d'Orgue"} and c-minor).This way, the other 2 volumes of 1) Preludes & Fugues where the Preludes are strictly preludes, plus 2) the initial volume of trio-sonate, the 3rd-part of the Klavierubung and various Chorale-Preludes and workings around, are properly balanced and complemented to give the overwhelming bulk of Bach's entire organ oeuvre.

All of these are beautifully reproduced from the authoritative Bach-Gesellschaft edition at a fraction of the price those volumes would cost otherwise![Those who're unhappy about the page-turns had better blame the Bach-Gesellschaft instead!]

Most highly recommended, yet again!Bravo Dover!!!

Blues and Jazz Complete (Book & 2 CDs) [Paperback] Review

Blues and Jazz Complete [Paperback]Dr. Konowitz presents a thorough, pedagogically sound introduction to blues and jazz. The book is spiral bound, so it lays flat on your music stand. A variety of blues and jazz techniques are meticulously illustrated. New chords are introduced with a nice full page guide to the keyboard fingering. It is a bit cookie cutter, but having the fingering written out below and above the staffs is a plus. My only complaint is that the "band" seems to be a cheesy concoction of General MIDI instruments played through an inadequate sound engine. The CD sound quality is irritating. One word of extra advice: You will not need the CD for the companion book, Chords Complete, because it only contains incidental backing rhythm tracks for the chord exercises. I have four books authored byKonowitz. The sound quality of the CDs are uniformly cheesy except for the Listen and Learn Blues Book published in 2002.

Complete Piano Trios [Paperback] Review

Complete Piano Trios [Paperback]The First Trio, Opus 8 in B Major as all initial Brahms (the Piano Sonatas, the First Symphony)all get off to great heights, like claiming territory, and the young Brahms still had that Schumann aesthetic searching for private moments, a working away from the Beethoven conception of symphonic largesse. So Brahms' chamber setting have initially some challenge and interest, but he seemed to repeat himself too often, lumbering at materials that in retrospect had little to offer his own magical aesthetic. There are dollips of illuminations(as Tovey might say).
I recall a Vintage recording,on RCA Artur Rubenstein, Yasha Heifitz and Fournier??,I forgot the cellist, wonderful telescoping, everyone listened to each other, and made the work compelling, in fact I've yet to hear it played even approaching it. The lyricism in the opening 'Allegro con brio' here is unforgettable, perhaps the key of B major suggests this or brings things out of composers that other Keys cannot or refuse to; the main melodic materials, really a broken resonant chord, the major sixth interval; gorgeous stuff filled with anxiety, the opaque, and the question of art; as well in the more violent turbulent rhytmic passages, like Brahms is saying "things are not that nice in Hamburg living as a bachelor" Although he thought Bismarck was quite progressive. Glad that Johannes remained a composer his life.

There is an orchestration or timbral problem(s) with the other chamber settings most notably the 'string quartets' less so the 'Piano Quintets',(the unforgettable F Minor) in that Johannes thought he was writing for the orchestra, such an enormous sound he thought he believed he was getting from four strings who cannnot project a sound ad infinitum no matter how many double stops are put on the playing field, and as his soaring melodies take up imaginative space that suggest or imply something grander. So Barhms, lis musical language I think struggle between these two lifeworlds. That's why I like the 'Trios', for they seem to coax more refinement, challenge and innovation as well (the Clarinet and the Horn??,avant-garde!!) of timbre from Brahms. The final A minor with the Clarinet also has problems but it looks further unpretenciously than the other works. The Clarinet timbre is quite distinctive and its solo role never seems to go away or recede into the hinterlands, enveloping as you might find in Mozart's Clarinet Quintets)Mozart knew how to shape and "melt" timbres together, never out of place, and Johannes should have listened or looked at Wolfgang more) but Johannes simply "drops" it(The Bb Clarinet) in the discourse of the A minor trio, and so the piece might come to be a Sonata for Clarinet with cello and piano accompaniment. He learned the clarinet language from Richard Muelfield(so the ending Clarinet Sonatas are progressive more than Bismarck) to function more than as accompaniment, the piano is a real part not a recepticle to keep time and add nice chords; what kind of accompaniment can a Clarinet provide however when not scouring the heavens for profound materials in romantic music is open to question?, the Romantics did not think of wind instruments as a "Solo",not really as the 20th Century was come to do, only if it was within the purview of a concerto, and then Brahms would have made music history if he had written a Clarinet Concerto, Think of It ?!!, so in the A Minor the Clarinet again takes up much space, the timbre is not blended well or thought through deeply; it is far from interestingat each moment but it is there nonetheless, have it rest,,and without the unforgettable violoncello moments, the piece would disintegrate into oblivion; the concluding Scherzo(Allegro) however redeems him the writing is threadbare with a nice minor motif to keep things in the air and directly functional as opposed to the cumbersome 'Adagio' where the piano tones fade quickly away,so the pianist simply sits there doing nothing. The continuous pulsing effect in the piano of chords placed on every beat is simply filler, this is high romanticism I guess so extremities and indulgences and false relationships to other timbres is fine for posterity.
The Horn Trio at first as well is pure innovation but again Brahms tried his best but he himself many times in these situations is his own worst enemy, for the Horn is utilized simply as another voice, and it could have bee (as the A Minor where a Viola can be substituted for the Clarinet part) in retrospect the Horn simply "doesn't fit" and I mean listen to the piece again. It sticks out against the melancholia of the Violin melos, as too much vibrato (Yuckeee!). Ligeti thought he would improve upon this creative paradigm and furnish the trio venue with his newly found post-modern folky surface style-for-the-least-common-denominator(not as interesting than the earlier Ligeti of the 'Cello Concerto', or the 'Second String Quartet'), but Gyorgy tried his hand anyway as Brahms heroically did. ((Again please return to Mozart for some guidance on how to nor "drop" timbre into the field of play, for they could be, or become "unwelcome" guests. And the other instruments feel than encumbered without cause.))

Casio PX110 Privia 88-key Digital Piano Kit with Stand and AC Adapter Review

Casio PX110 Privia 88-key Digital Piano Kit with Stand and AC AdapterThe weighted keyboard feels a lot like a real piano. It is nice to be able to play pipe organ sounds and experiment with combinations of sounds. You can use any two instruments at the same time...Grand piano and strings is wonderful as is Grand piano 2 and electric piano 2. The recorded library is very nice as well. The sound is pretty full on all of them. Not exactly like playing a pipe organ or a piano, but that is not expected on a keyboard.
The pedal plug ins are great. You can plug in to sustain or soft. You can also adjust the tone, loudness, and a host of other things by pressing function and a combination of keys. They have thought of most everything I needed. Also you can use a headset so you can play while others are sleeping!

Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach (Kalmus Edition) [Paperback] Review

Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach [Paperback]I bought this for my husband who is learning to play.I've been playing for over 40 years and the firstthing i noticed was the different rewritten notation. It looked like it was rewritten for more inexperienced pianists.I tried one piece, and it was fine. But then I played one of Bach's famous Minuets, and discovered an error in the notation.I can imagine there must me many more errors and I cannot recommend this version of this famous Bach piano book.I am going to have to look for another edition and hopefully will find the pieces correct.
