If you compare this book with op. 139, you will see some simple patterns.For that matter, if you compare the pieces in this book with each other, you will see some simple patterns.

Both books begin with simple melodies which belabor the key of C major.Both books overdose on square melodies written in the binary form.Both books overdo block chords and broken chords.There are a few pieces in which the bass has the melody, and it is always right after the repeat sign.Counterpoint, what's that?

Czerny's harmonic vocabulary rivals that of a country western group.Until the first secondary dominant occurs in #37, it is all I, IV, and V.After that, there are 2 augmented sixths and 1 diminished seventh.They all occur on measure 29 our of 32.

The book was a fun sightreading exercise, though.The second half has sixteenth-note scale passages.#55 has some challenging rhythms.A complete performance takes about an hour and a half.

Six Barcaroles (Kalmus Edition) [Paperback] Review

This collection of sheet music only contains six of the thirteen Barcarolles of Gabriel Fauré. (Les Troisième Barcarolles).It is, nevertheless, well worth the price.

I first heard these compositions some thirty five years ago (1971) when Jean Phillipe Collard released his first recording. His first recording was in 1971 just after he won the Gabriel Fauré competition in France (at the incredible age of 21). I believe there is still no finer recording.

The recording is available on Amazon but only from independent sources.

Here are the six barcaroles in this collection of sheet music. The music is clear, readable and professionally reproduced.

The Seasons, Op. 37 (Kalmus Edition) [Paperback] Review

The major problem with this product is its printing quality: notes on certain pages are blurred, and it feels like a product of an old-fashioned typewriter. I've bought music scores from the same series before, and was pretty happy with them--that's why I chose this edition over others. But I have to say, unfortunately, the quality is not very consistent.

Intonations and Toccatas (Kalmus Edition) [Spiral-bound] Review

Sebastian Anton Scherer was an organist in Ulm as the War of Thirty Years came to an end. His collection of smaller and greater organ pieces is heavily influenced by the recent Italian organ style. The toccatas are written in a broad and solemn style close to out-written improvisation. The canzonas are quite different in style: to me, they are small treasures of melodical invention and intellectual playfullness. Scherer is a nice friendship for mass and for evensong - but a lot of his qualities are concealed in the execution and the registration, left to the discretion of the organist. Thanks to Calmus for the spiral binding of the score!

This is an excellent book for a beginner. I've only been playing for a few months and can sight play just about all of these songs. Unlike a lot of the other beginner songs books that sound fake and barley recognizable, I was surprised at the quality of sound. I would definitely recommend this book to those who just want some songs to play for the family during the holidays.(Oh,yeah and if you want to save a few bucks always buy used. You can get the same items for less than half the price of anew one, Also, if you don't like it than you haven't lost much. Just make sure you check the company's quality ratings first, anything 97% or higher.

The Days of Haydn, Mozart & Beethoven (Kalmus Edition) [Paperback] Review

I hesitated a bit before purchasing this collection because on the surface it seemed to duplicate an awful lot of repertoire from many of the easily available anthologies of Classical period works, but once I developed an unheathly obsession for obtaining an arrangement of the Haydn Serenade from Op.3 no.5 I took the plunge and boy, am I glad I did. Simply put, this is a winner. In addition to the Serenade (which apparently has now been identified as actually being by Roman Hofstetter) this book has a great deal to offer. I'm assuming it's a reprint of the 1935 edition edited by Albert Weir for which Amazon also has listings, but if so Mr. Weir's name didn't survive the migration from Kalmus to its current Warner incarnation. This is one of those old-friend type layouts with smudgy little pictures of the composers and sometimes vague titles that make you go elsewhere for opus numbers, but that's part of its charm, like its titling of potpourri medleys from operas as "mosaics".
There are a few commonly encountered chestnuts (can't have Beethoven without the first movement of the 'Moonlight',can we?) but not too many, and the inclusion of many less familiar pieces from the likes of Dussek, Clementi, Steibelt, and others is ample compensation. The C Major Mozart sonata is the familiar K545, and the Mozart Minuet from the "Divertimento in D" is from K334:it's one of those things you'll probably recognize without having known what it was beforehand, just like the Haydn Serenade. In addition to the chronological index shown in the Amazon "look inside" pages, there are Title and Composer indices which will probably be more useful for browsing the book; also, the chronological listing leaves out the "Beggar's Opera" potpourri by J.C. Pepusch. The C Major Mozart sonata is the familiar K545, and the Mozart Minuet from the "Divertimento in D" is from K334:it's another one of those things you'll probably recognize without having known what it was beforehand. The arrangement of the slow movement of Beethoven's Fifth symphony is also a great way to show all those snooty conductors that you know how this piece really should be played.
Throw in the fact that the book is printed on bright white paper with clear typefaces and you have a clear winner. If you're looking for a collection to just slap on the music rack and play through for a while I'm guessing you'll enjoy this one as much as I do.

Out of all the musical forms he could have chosen, Streabbog wrote all of the pieces in this book are in the ternary form.All of the melodies are in four-measure blocks, and there is almost no counterpoint.Variety of harmony is also lacking.Pungent dissonances such as diminished sevenths and augmented sixths are non-existent.

Burgmuller and Clementi win by a wide margin.

The Genius of Duke Ellington [Paperback] Review

I had wanted a Duke Ellington piano solo book for a long time. And the unfortunate part about buying jazz books is that they aren't available in local stores. There's no way to look inside of the book online, so I basically have to guess which ones are good.

So I guess you see where I'm going - I am not completely happy with it. All of the songs are 1 or 2 pages. After the basic composition, there is no improvisation on the melody. Plus, a lot of the songs are labeled "Boogie-Woogie", which is not my favorite style.

The plus side is that I did learn a cool trick. Now that I know that I don't like really short songs, I can use what is available on Amazon - page count and song count. Doing the math, this book has songs that are an average of 1.7 pages. A different book that I have enjoyed has 5.25 pages per song. So before buying a book, I can check that out.

The other good thing is that the songs have grown on me. The arrangements are by Duke Ellington himself, and not someone arranging his orchestra songs for piano solo. So I like playing what the genius himself arranged. Out of the book, there are a few gems.

Sleigh Ride and Other Christmas Songs & Carols [Paperback] Review

I thought this product was the same collection of music we had as a kid... but no.:(Anyway, the collection still has a lot of good songs in it, but I didn't realize that the "Big Note Piano" on the corner meant simplified.It's definitely beginner music (intermediate and advanced players will be rather bored).

I guess they don't make the full collection anymore.It's too bad.I'm looking for some old Christmas songs that were only in this book.

I don't know what it is, but these sonatinas aren't as melodious as the well-known 6 sonatinas by Clementi.

If you are looking for protypical sonatinas, you might be disappointed.Each sontaina consists of only two movements, the second movement being a minuet or rondo.Moreover, the fourth sonatina is the only one with a second theme in a related key.The other first movements lean more toward the AABA form.

All the same, this work provides for a pleasant sightreading exercise.

These Kalmus edition scores are excellent inexpensive scores, which contain revised (later) versions of Widor's symphonies. Alesis P3 Power Supply Barrel Review

The Alesis SR-16 drum machine has to be one of the most prolific electronic devices on earth! The thing first came out in 1990, yet they're still selling. With so many in existence, it's inevitable that used ones are around to be had.

A friend gave his to me, and it's perfect for my home recording studio, as a midi pad (I'm surprised at how much NEW ones cost these days, with not that many additional features!)

No power supply, though, so I had to purchase this replacement. Great price, and it works perfectly. This is really a "step-down transformer," not an AC/DC converter, since the output is 9VAC, so it's hard to find a "generic" device.

Be sure to check to see what type of adapter your unit takes; there are different plugs available. This one is the "barrel type."

Casio CDP 100 Digital Piano Review

We purchased this item for my wife who is an acoomplished pianist. She has a grand piano and has played and taught piano (private and college level).
Reason for purchase, to have a portable item that could be used by us in churches or situations where a decent paino was not available. This unit is very portable. A little bulkier then the smaller keyboards but you do have the benefit of a standard piano keyboard.
She is happy with the tone quality and action of the keys. The Casio will definately handle most of the music that she would play.
She realizes that this does not compare to her grand piano but she admits that it is an excellent item for the money.
The only drawback is that it does not have a dedicated line to hook into an amplifier.An adapter has to be used on the headphones jack.
Definately a good buy.

Music for Little Mozarts: Deluxe Starter Kit [Paperback] Review

I am a mom that sings, but not a pianist.The price of piano lessons prevent us from having our kids take lessons at young ages.I looked at one of the lessons from a local studio and they said they use this series, so I ordered it.

I know how to play a little, and this book/cd/notecards, etc... is absolutely perfect for us.My 4-year-old son is learning at an amazing speed and he loves it.The cd that comes with it helped with the excitement.The dry-erase board that you can learn the letters of the keyboard with is wonderful because you can erase and don't have to use papers over and over.Plus, the little magnets that come with it are a great tool in getting them to understand that they can compose their own little measure or two, then I can play it for them.

I'm a huge fan and will be using this for my 2-year-old when she's old enough too, and I'll be ordering the next levels soon.

And we're saving TONS of money.I figure that once they are old enough out of these books, and are still interested and beyond my capabilities of teaching, we'll pay the high price of lessons.

The Professional Touch [Paperback] Review

I buy lots of printed music, particularly piano arrangements, and I'd give this one an eight out of ten. Arrangements are full and moderately sophisticated without being ball busters. The book is good value for the price although I would have liked to have seen maybe 1/2 dozen more titles and maybe some more obscure tunes in the mix. The accompanying CD is an amazingly flat rendering of the tunes and you shouldn't have to work too hard to make them sound better than that - maybe that was the intention and, if so, it has succeeded.

Sousa's Great Marches in Piano Transcription [Paperback] Review

And it's not the fault of the editors either. There was such a clamor for Sousa marches after they had been played in public that his publishers, mainly Church Music in Philadelphia, made the bold move of reducing the band scores to smaller pianistic proportions. This creates an imbalance that is hard to correct. Unlike marches by E.T. Paull, Harry Lincoln and others that WERE written for piano, Sousa Marches were carefully crafted to suit the varying timbres of a military concert band. Therefore on pieces like Liberty Bell, Washington Post and Stars and Stripes Forever, much of the variety and excitement are lost along with some of the piccolo or percussion lines. Cymbal smashes are replaced by high chords, and bass lines are simplified for pianists of average skill. Some of the pieces were transcribed in the key of the brass instruments, making them a step higher on the piano. So why buy it? Historical interest, such as the song version of Stars and Stripes, and the short bio of Sousa contained in the beginning. Look, if this were the only book of its kind, I wouldn't be dumping on it.But since there are so many like it, who would bother with this?

Half of it is technical exercises.If that's your bag, you're far better served by the jaw-droppingly sublime Burgmuller, Czerny & Hanon: Piano Studies Selected for Technique and Musicality - Intermediate - Volume 1, which has three volumes.It starts at a lower level than this but goes much further.So who needs this one?

The other half is basically reference material:spellings-out of various scales, arpeggios, harmonic scales, etc.If that's what you need, the reference book of choice is The Complete Book ofScales, Chords, Arpeggios and Cadences: Includes All the Major, Minor (Natural, Harmonic, Melodic) & Chromatic Scales - Plus Additional Instructions on Music Fundamentals, which has tons more than this Schmitt.

The Right Hand According to Tatum [Paperback] Review

I found this book to be pretty well written. the author gives an explanation of each phrase, some notes about it and possible variations, and also a brief discussion of the way tatum utilized all those phrases. the book also offers some transcriptions of tatum. But regardless of this, i felt this isnt the way to go: the best way to improve your playing is to transpose these solo's yourself and come up with your way of playing his phrases. Overall, very informative and interesting book about one of the greatest (jazz) musicians of all time

Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel Piano Music [Paperback] Review

The pieces in the book were fine pieces, and discovering the style of Mendelssohn's sister was interesting.The annoyance in this book was that the chords were improperly marked.This means that the printed page showed an arpeggio with accidentals, but frequently the accidental would be marked on only ONE of the two occurences of that note in the arpeggio!I had problems throughout the entire book locating missing accidentals in chords that involved more than one octave!Then I kept having to add the accidentals!

If you're looking for a deal, look elsewhere.I just began taking a piano class about a month ago, and I was looking for a keyboard to practice with.I ordered this expecting decent quality, but this keyboard couldn't sound any worse.It's not worth the price at all.My roommate bought a Yamaha that's easily worth the $110.I don't know if other reviewers got a better quality product, but this is definitely NOT in the same league as a Yamaha (as another reviewer says).If you're considering buying a keyboard that you're going to use for more than a week or a month, buy something else.I wouldn't buy this for my little brother.I've never taken a music class in my life and even I could tell the sound was off.If you do decide to buy this, you're taking a pretty big risk of being disappointed.

Alfred's Teach Yourself to Play Accordion [Paperback] Review

Coming into learning to play the accordion with a musical background along with 3 actual accordion lessons, I felt this book did not give enough practice music between learning new skills.The jump to using alternating bass was a bit abrupt and frightened me back to easier music. The one plus for this book is that it does introduce the accordion player to a wide variety of music available:polka, zydeco, cajun, irish, classical and blues.I will come back to this book eventually when my playing level gets to the point that I am not frustrated by it. I happily went back to the Palmer-Hughes books and am learning and playing some whacky children's songs along with some really nice sounding pieces...you have to play the "Injun Song!" on page 34 of Book One in the series - it will impress your friends and is lots of fun!I started Book Two this week - it's only been a month since I began my journey - and am having a great time even though my cats are still afraid of my accordion!

A Touch of Romance (WB Solo Library) [Paperback] Review

My all-time favorite piano piece to play is Le Salon de Musique by Eugenie Rocherolle, so when I saw a whole book of romantic music by her, I had to have it. These pieces are just want I had hoped they would be. Her ability to mix up chords to hold an eerily enchanting tone is just the signature feel I want in the romantic pieces I so enjoy playing. I took 7 years of actual classical piano lessons and have dappled in it for the last 4 or so years, so I would say for a mid to late intermediate player these pieces are just the right amount of challenging.I could sight-read through them slowly and decide the first time through that Souvenirs de Paris was going to be my favorite piece.Each song is only a few pages long, and they are quite different from one another (I think one of them has a Russian feel) making learning them much more enjoyable than a long strenuous journey toward playing perfection.

Being a professional pianist for over 10 years, I heard Rhapsody in Blue after buying the Fantasia 2000 CD.I was astonished.I immediately went to Sam Ash and I found this book.It is by far THE MOST COMPLETE sheet music book of this piece.The piano 4 hands or version for 2 pianos doesn't come close to what this book has.In the first several pages, it describes all of the changes and improvisations put on the piece since its debut.Then, it gives the player and FULL version, including, orchestra parts that can be played on the piano.Granted, it's a very difficult piece, but it sounds wonderful.Even if you're a beginner or intermediate player, you will find much information and joy from this book.I highly recommend it!

Wow, this book is a treasure. I am taking lesson for 3 years and as an adult, my fall back is speed as I don't have flexible fingers like young kids.I have been doing Hanon trying to strengthen and to keep my fingers flexible, but I get so bored with the monotone.I still am at a beginner/intermediate level (4) and this book is just perfect to learn and practice. This book is definitely great until advanced level, as it will be so enjoyable to play and you will never get bored. All 25 pieces have beautiful melodies and so enjoyable to learn and most importantly...the speed.I listened to the CD and it helps so much to feel the speed; and with such lovely melodies, I could not get bored.This book is sooo worth it to have in your collection.I'm so glad I have it in my collection.

Etudes, Op. 42 (Kalmus Edition) [Paperback] Review

Scriabin's once-huge piano catalogue is getting very hard to find, as his heartrending music falls even more out of fashion than it was 80--or even 40--years ago.The master is too prickly and demanding of the kid who just wants to play pop and easy Chopin.As a forgotten master, only a few pieces are affordably available to modern pianists, and only a few of these few have finger notations for the difficult--or should I say the MORE difficult--passages.Someday, at this rate of frustration, I'll be forced to invest in that green German series of 6 books at $42 a pop, on the off-chance someone remembered that real humans still struggle through his knotty compositions.

This collection of the famous Op. 42 has a lot to recommend it, though.The book is light, slightly oversized, easy to read, and lays nicely on the music stand.No fingering, though.So I'm on my own for that weird filigree'd, whispy atonal measure in 16th notes that's sprinkled throughout the Grand Piece, No. 5.Only Scriabin is worth it.

PS: Yes, I know you can download music scores for free, and in a pinch (Alex's small Poème Tragique, for instance), it's fine.But it's a pain, and it forces publishers to drop the catalogue.Scriabin MUST stay in print!

Pop/Rock - Note-for-Note Keyboard Transcriptions Review

This book is exactly what the title says it is: accurate note-for-note transcriptions of pop/rock songs.It doesn't have the typical cheesy arrangements with the vocal line mixed into the piano part.It also doesn't have guitar songs that don't quite work on the piano.All the songs have prominent piano/keyboard parts, and every one I've tried is faithful to the original.Since the melody is typically not in the piano, you do need to be able to sing along or have a friend who can sing.But the result sounds much, much better than just about any other piano book I've bought.If you like at least a few of the songs in the book, you will not be disappointed!

This book is the best in the PH Series. The songs are intermediate, but they sound as if they are extremely difficult (although they are not). Two Guitars, Treasure Waltz, Rumanian Rhapsody, 9 Blind Mice, Glow Worm, etc. are just some of the songs included in this book. The arrangements are stellar...great for entertaining.
